    Visual Enhancements for Improved Interactive Rendering on Light Field Displays

    Rendering of complex scenes on a projector-based light field display requires 3D content adaptation in order to provide comfortable viewing experiences in all conditions. In this paper we report about our approach to improve visual experiences while coping with the limitations in the effective field of depth and the angular field of view of the light field display. We present adaptation methods employing non-linear depth mapping and depth of field simulation which leave large parts of the scene unmodified, while modifying the other parts in a non-intrusive way. The methods are integrated in an interactive visualization system for the inspection of massive models on a large scale 35MPixel light field display. Preliminary results of subjective evaluation demonstrate that our rendering adaptation techniques improve visual comfort without affecting the overall depth perception.

    Fast Neighborhood Search on Polygonal Meshes

    We introduce a spatial index to support the fast retrieval of large neighborhoods of points on a polygonal mesh. Our spatial index can be computed efficiently off-line, introducing a negligible overhead over a standard indexed data structure. In retrieving neighborhoods of points on-line, we achieve a speed-up of about one order of magnitude with respect to standard topological traversal, while obtaining much more accurate results than straight 3D range search. We provide quantitative comparisons of results obtained with our method with respect to known techniques.

    3D Reconstruction and Augmented Reality in Bronchoscopic Intervention

    The use of stereoscopic visualization has recently been proposed for many applications. Other than for entertainment, stereo viewing is being proposed for robotics and medical teleoperation. This paper proposes to exploit the stereo-camera setup available in stereo-viewing systems for 3D reconstruction. We focus on medical endoscopic applications. The advantages of having a reconstructed vision-based depth map during endoscopic navigation and intervention are many, including the possibility for generation of an augmented-reality visual scenario to support surgeons during interventions. We ran our experiments on a realistic graphic model of human bronchus to study feasibility of the proposed concept. We reconstructed depth maps of a bronchus environment and used them to generate augmented reality views of the observed scenes.

    Information Visualization on Organized Crime Trials

    Today everyone on the Internet becomes an active writer. It is simpler than ever to produce and to share new knowledge on the net. Users risk to be overwhelmed by too such information. To handle unorganized data may involve a huge effort by people and this could lead to information overload. A promising way to face these problems is Information Visualization. This contribution is a report of using visuo-spatial reasoning to help sociology scholars to understand and to manage large amounts of textual data. We use a very interesting dataset, especially for sociologists and jurists, extracted from a collection of sentences of trials on organized crime activities in Sicily. We report the results obtained in so far clustering and visualizing data.

    Crime Scene Interpretation Through an Augmented Reality Environment

    Despite its potential advantages, gesture based interface usage is currently rather limited due to operational and practical issues, while most proposals aim at replacing mouse and keyboard functionalities for medical/surgical applications. This paper presents a crime scene interpretation framework which combines augmented reality visual paradigm and gesture based interaction to provide a new generation of detectives with interactive visualization and manipulation of virtual exhibits while seeing the real environment. The idea is to augment the exploration of the crime scene by means of a see-through head mounted display, exploiting a small set of simple (user-wise) gestures and the visual interface to enable a wider set of commands and functionalities, improving both the efficacy and the accuracy of user-system interaction. The proposed system allow the user to freely position virtual replicas of real object to interactively build visual hypothesis about the crime under investigation, or even to set virtual landmarks which can be used to take distance/angular measurements. All these action can be performed without mouse and keyboard but simply through intuitive gestures.

    An Augmented Reality Application to support Learning and to get Participant Feedback

    Mobile devices are radically changing the way in which we work and communicate. Most of the innovative devices offer the opportunity to integrate augmented reality in mobile applications, permitting the combination of the real world with virtual information. This feature can be particularly useful to enhance informal and formal didactic actions based on student collaboration and on traditional lecture. This paper describes a ''collaborative campus'', originated in the physical architectural space, but exposing learning contents and social information structured as augmented virtual areas. To this aim, ACCampus, a mobile augmented reality system, supporting the sharing of contextualized information has been proposed. This system combines the world perceived by the phone camera with information concerning the student location and his community, enabling users to share multimedia information in location-based content areas. User localization is initially detected through QR codes. The successive positions of the user are determined using the mobile device sensors. Each augmented area is univocally spatially associated to a representative real wall area. Selective content sharing and collaboration are also supported enabling a user to distribute his/her augmented contents to specific users or groups. The application also supports the teacher during Face-to-Face lecture in receiving feedback from the audience concerning their agreement with and the clarity of the presentation.

    Gestural Interaction for Robot Motion Control

    Recent advances in gesture recognition made the problem of controlling a humanoid robot in the most natural possible way an interesting challenge. Learning from Demonstration field takes strong advantage from this kind of interaction since users who have no robotics knowledge are allowed to teach new tasks to robots easier than ever before. In this work we present a cheap and easy way to implement humanoid robot along with a visual interaction interface allowing users to control it. The visual system is based on the Microsoft Kinect's RGB-D camera. Users can deal with the robot just by standing in front of the depth camera and mimicking a particular task they want to be performed by the robot. Our framework is cheap, easy to reproduce, and does not strictly depend on the particular underlying sensor or gesture recognition system.

    3D-ize U! A Real-time 3D Head-model Texture Generator for Android

    Recently, the number of applications developed for smartphones has dramatically increased; however, at the moment, applications having the purpose of creating and displaying 3D models are quite rare. The goal of this work is to build an application that allows the user to see the virtual three-dimensional representations of their friends and interact with them. The main challenge is to achieve results similar to those that a computer would produce, optimizing the process to deal with the constraints due to the technology used. Since there are no similar mobile applications, this work will make possible to create a base onto which realizing applications that have customized 3D models as a common feature.

    Augmented Reality Aided Maintenance for Industrial Applications

    This paper presents an augmented reality system suited for maintenance training and support in industrial environments. We describe how augmented reality can help in reducing the effort of performing sequences of maintenance tasks in complex systems. The proposed approach is aimed to facilitate items localization in technical equipment by means of context-based instructions, virtual labels, 2D and 3D graphics, and animated virtual tools. These virtual contents are transformed to be visualized, co-registered to the real world, through a see-through Head-Mounted Display (HMD). To the aim of enhancing tracking reliability, we report some effective techniques to address drift errors in head tracking. The interaction paradigm is thought to reduce the keyboard usage to make the system less intrusive during user's activity. Deterministic finite automaton (DFA) equivalent representation is exploited to regulate maintenance assistance operations, providing a versatile mean to define either simple or complex procedure in a easy, verifiable and readable way. We also propose a collection of XML tags which enable the conversion of DFA in XML files, ensuring high extensibility and ease of understanding. First experimental results, targeted to augmentation of industrial racks, show a measurable improvement in performing maintenance operations with regard to the time needed to complete the task.

    A Decomposition-based Approach to Modeling and Understanding Arbitrary Shapes

    Modeling and understanding complex non-manifold shapes is a key issue in shape analysis and retrieval. The topological structure of a non-manifold shape can be analyzed through its decomposition into a collection of components with a simpler topology. Here, we consider a representation for arbitrary shapes, that we call Manifold-Connected Decomposition (MC-decomposition), which is based on a unique decomposition of the shape into nearly manifold parts. We present efficient and powerful two-level representations for non-manifold shapes based on the MC-decomposition and on an efficient and compact data structure for encoding the underlying components. We describe a dimension-independent algorithm to generate such decomposition. We also show that the MC-decomposition provides a suitable basis for geometric reasoning and for homology computation on non-manifold shapes. Finally, we present a comparison with existing representations for arbitrary shapes.

    A Virtual Design Museum

    The "Virtual Design Museum" is a research that aims to investigate the possibilities of representating a virtual product with high cultural content, such as Industrial Design Products, using Virtual Reality techniques and methods.The product design is characterized by multiple facets in all its stages of development, starting from the first idea of the designer, related to historical, social and cultural context in which he operates, up to its forms of representation like initial sketches of the product, the creation of physical prototypes, technical drawing in which details are refined, the engineering that connects the aesthetic with the functional and productive characteristics, taking into account the manufacture complexity and the possible technological innovations and also the phases of packaging and advertising.The research illustrates some interesting opportunity to multiply the levels of narration of a product, analyzing of the concept of "design museum" and how it is declined in a variety of international experiences, and approaching the different meaning of ""virtual museum"", interpreted very differently depending on the various implementations.
