Item Unambiguous Analysis of Woman Breast Shape for Plastic Surgery Outcome Evaluation(The Eurographics Association, 2006) Farinella, G. M.; Impoco, G.; Gallo, G.; Spoto, S.; Catanuto, G.; S. Battiato and G. Gallo and F. StancoThis paper reports a multidisciplinary research between computer science and plastic and reconstructive surgery. In particular, a new method is proposed to unambiguously define a geometric partitioning of a large thoracic area including the breast mound. The new technique uses only well-defined anatomical points, defined and selected by surgeons. A simple sequence of geometric operations is performed to partition the breast surface into four anatomic subunits, according to clinically derived breast meridian and equator lines. Using this breast shape partition, useful measurement can be extrapolated on 3D model data set. Our method has been validated on a number of breast 3D models acquired by means of a commercial scanner on real clinical cases collected by Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan (INT).Item A Survey of Digital Mosaic Techniques(The Eurographics Association, 2006) Battiato, S.; Blasi, G. Di; Farinella, G.M.; Gallo, G.; S. Battiato and G. Gallo and F. StancoArt often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we survey in an unified framework several methods to transform a raster input image into good quality mosaics. The common and different ideas among the methods are reported and described. Finally we try to address the evaluation problem of an NPR algorithm.Item Ramses: a Visual Steganographic System(The Eurographics Association, 2007) Battiato, S.; Blasi, G. Di; Gallo, G.; Patti, S.; Raffaele De Amicis and Giuseppe ContiSteganography is the art of "secret communication". Its goal is to transmit a message (information) hidden inside another visible message. The typical visible message used in many steganographic systems is a digital image and the embedded message is usually hidden by working in the Fourier domain. In this paper we present Ramses, a novel approach to the steganography based on the Puzzle Image Mosaic (PIM) technique ( [DGP05]) which uses the metaphor of the hieroglyphicwriting to hide the message in the image. Themessage is first coded by a sequence of small irregular images and then merged inside another image together with many other small images. We prove that the Kerckhoff's principle required by a steganographic technique is satisfied and experimental results show how it is very difficult to detect the hidden message.Item Smart Ideas for Photomosaic Rendering(The Eurographics Association, 2006) Blasi, G. Di; Gallo, G.; Petralia, M.P.; S. Battiato and G. Gallo and F. StancoPhotomosaic is a technique which transforms an input image into a rectangular grid of thumbnail images preserving the overall appearance. The typical photomosaic algorithm searches from a large database of images one picture that approximates a block of pixels in the main image. Since the quality of the output depends on the size of the database, it turns out that the bottleneck in each photomosaic algorithm is the searching process. In this paper we present a technique to speed-up this critical phase using the Antipole Tree Data Structure. This improvement allows the use of larger databases without requiring much longer processing time, leading to very interesting results. Further we present some ideas to render an image in a "photomosaic style". These techniques are based on QuadTree and fractal images and allow the creation of very interesting "photomosaic effects".Item Tradition and Virtuality: The Caltagirone Staircase(The Eurographics Association, 2006) Campisi, V.; Blasi, G. Di; Gallo, G.; S. Battiato and G. Gallo and F. StancoComputer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) are two of the most interesting research fields in Computer Science. In this paper we present an application of CG and VR in arts, tourist promotion and cultural heritage. We propose a technique able to simulate the Saint Mary of the Mount staircase, a magnificent staircase in Caltagirone, a beautiful baroque town in Sicily (Italy). Our system is an example of how new technologies may lead to a new way of interacting with traditional arts
