Item Recreating Past and Present: An Exceptional Student-Created Virtual Heritage Experience(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Anderson, Eike Falk; Sloan, Susan; Romero, Mario and Sousa Santos, BeatriceWe present an outstanding undergraduate student project in the form of a virtual heritage experience, created by a multidisciplinary group of six 4th semester undergraduate students from a range of computer graphics related programmes of study, ranging from 3D art and design to graphics software development. The "Exercise Smash" application allows participants to take part in a 1944 military exercise that was held in preparation of the D-Day landings in Normandy, during which several amphibious tanks sank, and then to dive down to the tank wrecks on the modern-day seafloor. The virtual heritage experience was presented during a public event at a military history museum and has also been demonstrated at an archaeology conference, being well-received in both cases.Item Towards a Formal Education of Visual Effects Artists(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Redford, Adam; Anderson, Eike Falk; Magana, Alejandra; Zara, JiriThe rapid growth of the visual effects industry over the past three decades and increasing demand for high quality visual effects for film, television and similar media, in turn increasing demand for graduates in this field have highlighted the need for formal education in visual effects. In this paper, we explore the design of a visual effects undergraduate degree programme and discuss our aims and objectives in implementing this programme in terms of both curriculum and syllabus.Item Streamlining Photogrammetry Reconstructions of Bone Fragments for Bioarchaeological Analysis, Conservation, and Public Engagement(The Eurographics Association, 2020) Redford, Adam; Mikulski, Richard; Anderson, Eike Falk; Ritschel, Tobias and Eilertsen, GabrielWe present a streamlined workflow for the 3D reconstruction of skeletal fragments, suitable for bioarchaeological analysis as well as public engagement and based on practices and applications from the feature film visual effects industry. Using a lowcost single-camera photogrammetry rig for close range photogrammetry and processing the results using standard 3D asset creation software from the visual effects industry, the resulting 3D models achieve a resolution that is sufficient for the clear representation of bone elements and any gross changes affecting them, such as severe trauma.Item Reconstructing the Past: Outstanding Student-Created Virtual Heritage Experiences(The Eurographics Association, 2021) Anderson, Eike Falk; Sousa Santos, Beatriz and Domik, GittaIn recent years, Computer Graphics (CG) and related techniques have become increasingly important for the preservation and dissemination of Cultural Heritage (CH). Here we present a set of three excellent CH reconstructions and virtual heritage experiences created by final year undergraduate students from several computer animation related programmes of study in the course of an optional course on ''CG and Animation for Cultural Heritage''. The three projects discussed here are interactive heritage experiences, including a reconstruction of the tomb of Tutankhamun, an Augmented Reality (AR) reconstruction of the Iron Age hillfort Maiden Castle, and a Virtual Reality (VR) reconstruction of ancient Stonehenge.Item Digital Matte Painting - An Effective Undergraduate Assignment(The Eurographics Association, 2022) Redford, Adam; Anderson, Eike Falk; Bourdin, Jean-Jacques; Paquette, EricThis paper presents an effective digital matte painting assignment from a course delivered as part of an undergraduate degree programme in visual effects. The assignment involves the creation of a final 3D shot from an initial 2D image, using various 2D image manipulation tools and appropriate 2.5D image projection techniques.
